It’s a funny Old Game – Great post by FC Business

It’s a Funny Old Game

UEFA’s Club Licensing Benchmarking Report released on Wednesday has laid bare the scale of the task facing the governing body in its efforts to bring club spending under control.

The report for financial year 2010, which covers the financial results from more than 650 top-division clubs across UEFA’s 53 member national associations revealed a staggering €1.6 billion ‘bottom-line’ net loss by top division clubs, 36% higher than the previous year record (€1.2billion).

But to say ‘It’s a funny old game’ would be an understatement as UEFA General Secretary, Gianni Infantino explained: “The total income of European professional club football has increased from €12bn [in 2009] to €12.8bn [in 2010]. This shows that from a popularity point of view, football is very healthy – the revenues continue to increase in a period where there is a very difficult economic situation worldwide.

“The problem that we have is that costs of club football have increased as well from €13.3bn [in 2009] to €14.4bn [in 2010]. Some 56% of top-division clubs reported net losses.”

The plight of Darlington and Portsmouth remind us of how ‘funny’ football really is.

Granada U11 D 0 – Blessington U11 B 12

Blessington U11’s showed a certain ruthlessness in this match putting an under strength Granada team to the sword from the off.The Blessington team itself had no fewer than 4 players missing, but still showed a great desire to kill this game off from the very start, the first goal however did not come until the 5th minute and this is when the flood gates really did open up. Daragh Gilroy picked up a lovely ball from Ryan Keogh and stormed right into the middle of the box where he slipped the ball to Tadgh Barrett,Tadgh swiftly played the ball back to Daragh who neatly slipped a lovely through pass to the on running Tadgh who blasted his shot low under the keeper (0-1). The second was pretty much the same, with the two boys up front and 4 in mid field swarming all over Granada,it was only a matter of time before the second came and on the 10th minute Adam Ogbannayo scored a lovely individual goal, when he took on 2 defenders and drilled his shot low across the keeper (0-2) Ryan Keogh provided the 3rd with a low shot from the edge the box after the ball was cleared from a corner kick (0-3).The fourth followed almost stright from the off and it was Adam who was on the scoresheet again, although some of the plaudits has to go to Tadgh Barrett who ran the length of the field and provided a lovely ball which Adam Ogbannayo volleyed in from about 4 yards out ( 0-4) Not to be out done Tadgh followed up with his second and Blesso’s 5th with a tap in after a scramble in the Granada defence (0-5) and just before half time Blesso made it six  when Adam got his hat trick with another fine solo effort jinking 2 Granada players before unleashing a fierce shot across the Granada keeper (0-6).Granada did have their moments though in truth these were limited due to tight defending from the Blesso defence in particular Eoin Kavanagh, Donacha Halpen and Conor Gilroy. The only real goal threat of note was a chance came when the Granada keeper launched a long ball down the middle which caught the blesso defence off guard, and with the ball breaking to the Granada striker Finn Harney the Blesso goalkeeper did really well to come out and smother. H-T (0-6)

The second half was much the same as the first, with the Blesso team were showing no mercy and Granada tiring badly it was inevitable that the score line would continue to grow.
Goal 7 and 8  came 5 minutes of each other and where Dara Broe Foster had provided both finishes, his first was a neat one two with Tadgh Barrett and he slotted in from close range(0-7),soon afterwards Daragh picked the ball on the edge of the box  and roundly unleashed a shot into the top corner of the net, (0-8) Ryan Keogh again got on the score sheet with a fine effort from the edge of the box, which is becoming a bit of a trade mark for the boy,He picked upma slack clearance from the Granada defence, steadied himself and blasted a low shot into the net leaving the keeper no chance,(0-9) Daragh Broe Foster completed his Hat trick with another fine effort set up by the lively Tadgh Barrett, leaving him an easy tap in from around 4 yards.(0-10).With only minutes remaining Adam got the ball on the wing and floated in a lovely cross to which Dara Broe foster attempted a bicycle kick,he connected but his shot was flying high and wide until the poor Granada defender stuck his head out to block the shot and he directed the ball into an open goal (0-11) The 12th goal was right on the stroke of time and it has to be said was the goal of the game,Cian McCarthy who had tried this a few time before hand to no avail, got the ball from about 15 yards out, took one touch and unleashed an unstoppable shot which crashed into the top of the net, it was an absolute peach of a goal (0-12)

Granada can take consolation in the fact they will not meet Blesso again and that to their credit they kept going until the final whistle, but to be fair Blesso would have been a match for anyone on this performance, they should great determination and no lack of skill, Well Done Guys

Blesso Team; Finn Harney,Conor Gilroy Eoin Kavanagh,Don Halpen,Ryan Keogh,Cian McCarthy,Dara Gilroy,Adams Ogbannayo,Dara Broe Foster,Tadgh Barrett and Yanni Cabalum

U10 Division 1 Result: Granada A 1-1 Blessington A

This was a performance that all the Blessington A players can be proud of. 1-1 against a Granada A outfit that we have never got the better of in recent seasons can only be viewed positively.

In particular our player’s excellent technique, decision making and team spirit shone through time and time again during the game.

Blessington started very well playing with the generous hill at the Mount Albany pitches and sought to take early advantage of the slower start by Granada. Shane Sargent, playing in centre midfield tested the keeper with a long range effort. Next up was Adam Walsh who shot just wide from a wonderful pass from Aidan Murphy. Granada started to find their rhythm and Séan Brien had to be fully alert to clear the ball from the goal line with two Granada players bearing down on him. Blessington’s goal came from a move started by Tadhg Murphy who beat two players and played the ball down the line to Eni Ilori who passed to Adam Walsh who took a deft touch and fired into the bottom right corner of the net giving the keeper no chance. It was nothing more than Blessington deserved after playing some great football. Granada determined to be back on level terms by the break, pushed hard for the equaliser but was undone by Cian Doyle and the agile Paddy Brady in goal who again was having an incredible game between the sticks.

The second half brought more goal mouth action as Shane Sargent hit the post and Folu Ilori shot narrowly wide after back-heeling the ball to get himself some space and firing a shot that left the keeper stranded. Sam Gallagher who was tightly marked throughout also went agonisingly close to doubling our lead after being released by Edward Carter.

Granada threw everything at Blessington in the final minutes but Ryan Mahon and Thomas O’Leary dealt with every situation calmly. Paddy turned a ball around the post after a well hit shot from the Granada no 7 and Cian Doyle headed the ball off the line from the resulting corner.

Granada’s goal came in the last minute and it was hard to take for some of the Blessington players who had given their all for forty minutes. However they should be proud of themselves as they played without fear despite losing their last three matches and almost got the result they deserved. Finally I’d like to acknowledge Paddy Brady’s display in goal. Some parents and players remarked to me afterwards that he never stopped shouting instructions and encouragement to his team-mates, great to hear that.

Blessington: Paddy Brady, Cian Doyle, Tadhg Murphy, Séan Brien, Aidan Murphy, Ryan Mahon, Thomas O’Leary, Edward Carter, Eni Ilori, Folu Ilori, Shane Sargent, Sam Gallagher

Blesso 4 – 3 Beechwood

A cracking game unfolded at the Community College today as Blesso started the New Year the way they signed off 2011 with a win.

Blesso showed no sign of the winter break today as they took a 3-1 lead into halftime with goals from Dean O’Connor,Ben Fitz(straight from a corner)and Sonny Simnpson.

An all round steady first half display from the starting line up of Mikey O’ Toole,Jack Denieffe,Daniel Cooney,Luke O’Brien,Ben Fitz,Sean Broderick,Sonny Simpson & Dean O’Connor saw Blesso well on top going into the break.

The second half saw the introduction of Dean Neilan,Colm Martin,Emma Downes & Conor O’Toole for Blesso.
Blesso started in the same bright fashion as they left the first half but Beechwood obviously spurred on by their halftime team talk looked a bit hungrier and got the game back to 3-2 with a powerful header from a corner.Game on !!!!.
The game was now end to end stuff with both sides going close on many occasions,Dean Neilan for Blesso was starting to show his class on the wing with some lovely turns,Conor O’ Toole was fighting tooth and nail for every loose ball and Daniel Cooney was reading every dangerous situation that came Blesso’s way, beyond his year’s.Ball’s were fizzing over the bar from both teams in all direction’s.

Beechwood got the break with a cracking goal from their No.2 with a pile-driver from 15 yards !!! 3-3.(class strike).

Blesso seemed a bit shell shocked but picked themselves up again with 3 minutes to go.Colm Martin in particular was having his best game for Blesso to date since joining the squad from the academy with some timely interventions.

Conor O’Toole’s gritty determination finally paid off as he skipped two heavy tackles to strike the winner for Blesso with a minute to go with a well deserved goal (well done conor).

All in all, another great performance from this Blesso side. Our passing style seem’s to be the key, keep it going guy’s & gal (Emma).

Blessington U11B 1 -1 Firhouse B

Disappointing results kept coming today at the Community College.

On paper this should have been a clear win for a strong Blesso side unbeaten in 2011 against a Firhouse team sitting mid-table and who blesso had beat comfortably at their grounds.

Whether the winter break  works is debatable and the 1st half clearly showed that teams without matches get seriously rusty,But in fairness Blesso cannot begrudge a very determined and dogged Firhouse team who were very organized and committed.Blesso took the game to Firhouse from the off with Dara Broe Foster and Ryan Mulvey in particular leading the line well and creating a few chances.the 1st clear cut chance of the game fell to Dara Broe foster who picked a ball up off  Tadgh Barrett and jinked past two players, just as he was about to unleash his shot from about six yards out,the ball took a bobble and he sliced his shot wide.Ryan Mulvey was next up with a lovely piece of play to round the defender he too found himself 1on 1 with the keeper, only to see his shot going slightly wide of the post.Of the few chances that came Firhouse way, their best effort came from a mix up in the Blesso defence which lead to a scramble around the six yard box to which no fewer than three firhouse players  shots blocked on the line.As the half wore on and Firhouse getting deeper, blesso were starting to find it hard to penetrate their defence and were reduced to long range efforts. One  minute before half time and Blesso finally broke the deadlock with a neat one-two from Cian Mc Carthy and Ryan keogh the ball broke to Dara Broe Foster who fired a low shot which took a wicked deflection and beat the goal keeper who was diving the other way. H-T 1-1

The second half was more of the same with all the attacking coming from Blesso and Firhouse defending stoutly.Cian McCarthy and Tadgh Barrett in the center of midfield where finding it difficult to impose their normal game and Adam Ogbannayo and Dara Broe Foster were finding that they were having to come inside more and more in the game to receive the ball, the game itself was becoming increasingly narrow with a lot of the play being played in and around the half way line.Chances still kept coming Blesso,s way a long free kick was brilliantly parried by the Firhouse keeper, unfortunately for blesso there was no-one following up,next Cian fired a shot at the edge of the box just wide,Dara then repeated Cians effort only to see his effort too just go wide of the post.Just a we all thought the game was running out to a 1-0,Firhouse had a rare break up the park to which they got a corner. The Firhouse player swung in a lovely cross only see it not dealt with by three Blesso players leaving the big Firhouse striker an easy tap in (1-1) There was only one real effort of note from either team after this, when Tadgh Barrett had a shot blocked in the six yard box,Blesso kept pushing but to no avail Full time 1-1

U10 Division 1 Result: Blessington A 1-4 Wayside Celtic

A disappointing result today for Blessington A. Despite some encouraging displays recently, we went down 4-1 to a well organized Wayside Celtic who had three teams in action at the Community College this morning. Blessington started brightly and for much of the opening period it was quite even with both teams attacking with pace. Wayside took the lead with a fortuitous goal. Paddy Brady saved brilliantly from a swerving shot only for it to fall kindly to a Wayside player and despite Cian Doyle’s heroic effort to clear, the ball rolled over the line. A few moments later Edward Carter and Folu Ilori combined brilliantly to release Eni Ilori who flicked the ball by the full back, cut inside the centre back with a neat juggle and hit a half volley just to the right of the far post. It really did deserve a goal! Blessington continued to press for the equaliser and Adam Walsh came close some moments later with a great run down the left side. Half time came after a series of Blessington corners. Blessington now with the narrow advantage of the hill and wind began to find their form and tested the Wayside keeper. However their luck was about to run out when after a well defended Wayside corner, one of our players was adjudged to have fouled in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. A surprise to all as neither set supporters saw anything wrong and expected the game to continue. Paddy Brady who had been a giant in goal all game stood tall and almost pushed the ball over the crossbar from the spot kick. 2-0! Blessington pulled one back as Edward Carter raced onto a poor pass from the Wayside full back and smashed into the net. The initiative shifted back again to Blessington as Sam Gallagher was allowed space and time to attack a full back wary of his tricky runs but it was short lived when a loose ball that should have been dealt with by Blessington was allowed to be picked up by the advancing Wayside forwards and converted. Wayside’s final goal came from a quick short corner that that was probably down to some tired legs after a huge second half effort by some of the Blesso lads. Our mistakes were punished today but our efforts could not be questioned.

We are back training on grass next week now that the evenings have lengthened and from week commencing 30 Jan 12 we will be training twice a week.
