Saturdays game was a bit of a tetchy affair, with Blessington U11’s not really looking their normal selves and up against a very defensive, yet organized Granada team. Previously Blessington had played several games against Granada and had yet to loose a tie, although this game was never really in doubt, the result still left Blessington looking more and more nervous as the game wore on.
The game started sprightly enough, with Blesso having two chances in quick succession, Ryan Mulvey was first up with a shot blocked in the six yard box, when he connected from a lovely ball threaded through from Daragh Broe Foster, Adam was next up when he drilled a shot into the side netting from an acute angle and this was really the pattern of the whole game with Blesso pouring forward, but wasteful in front of goal. Blessington had reshuffled there team after their defeat last week, with the two gilroy brothers starting at the back and Tadgh Barrett holding the middle of defense, and the three boys were immense in the first half pressing play back into the Granada half and passing great balls out of defense. Ryan had another two chances in quick succession, first a shot well wide of the goal as he went clear through, his second was a more close affair when he drilled his shot just by the post from about six yards out..But the little striker was to make amends not long after, he picked the ball at the edge of the box turned brilliantly and drilled a low shot into the corner of the net, Tadgh Miley had two great chances not long after this, his first was brilliantly saved from a long range effort and then the mid-fielder was very unlucky when he brilliantly slide in at the back post to meet a cross from Adams only to see his shot come back of the post, Daragh Gilroy was unlucky next when he headed a corner just over the bar, ( H-T 0-1)
The second half was more of the same, and chances were still being squandered, Daragh Broe foster was fierce unlucky when he hit the bar from edge of the box, next Adams again managed to fire into the side netting from about four yards out..Ryan Keogh had a lovely free kick tipped away from the Granada goal keeper and then Daragh Gilroy’s shot was blocked from the rebound, it was all one way traffic now, but Granada’s defense stood firm. One scare of note came midway through the second half when Granada broke out of defense, their winger had a brilliant run and slid a ball across the box, Ryan Keogh in trying to clear the danger fired the ball off his own post, the ball was finally cleared and that was really the only effort from Granada.Cian McCarthy was next up with a great drive from the edge of the box , saved well again from the Keeper, and the keeper was again to come to Granada’s rescue when he did brilliant to save at Daragh Broe Foster’s feet. This was really the last chance of the game and Blesso ran out some what unconvincing 1 nil winners
Great Credit again to all the coaches at Granada, who have transformed a team at the bottom of the division into an outfit very hard to break down..Well Done
