Blessington U11A first game of the new season was against Dalkey United A and provided the team with possibly our longest trip from Blessington for a game. Unfortunately Adam Walsh, Thomas O’Leary and Tadhg Murphy missed the first game but all should be back next week.
The game started at a slow enough pace as both teams suffered early nerves perhaps. Dalkey however settled quickly and had terrific support from their other juvenile teams who gathered to watch their club mates. Dalkey fashioned most of the early chances but Blessington’s No #1 Paddy Brady was more than equal to the efforts. Blessington however had the best chance of breaking the deadlock with great efforts from Eni and Folu Ilori but some fantastic defending by the tall and accomplished Dalkey United No #5 kept the score at 0-0 until just before HT.
Dalkey forced a corner and although Blessington defended it quite well the ball broke to one of their players who struck the ball first time. Paddy produced a fantastic save but the ball broke to another Dalkey forward and despite the efforts of Cian Doyle and Aidan Murphy he made no mistake from close range. HT 1-0 to Dalkey with Blessington believing that they could still get something from the game.
The second half had a better tempo from Blessington and we got out the ball quicker which allowed us to press higher up the pitch. The chances were coming thick and fast now for Shane Sargent, Eni and Folu Ilori but the Dalkey United No #5 was having a great game. A trademark powerful run from midfield by new captain Sam Gallagher brought a fantastic save from the Dalkey keeper. There was a feeling that this wasn’t going to be our day…
Dalkey broke with five minutes remaining and raced down the pitch to put the game out of our reach but Seán Brien and Ryan Mahon defended superbly to dispossess the Dalkey forward. However minutes later an almost identical move by Dalkey United needed to be dealt with by Paddy Brady as he raced off his line to beat the forward in a straight race for the ball. From the breaking ball Shane Sargent fed Edward Carter who drove at the Dalkey defense and powered by the big Dalkey United No #5. Edward’s pass was perfect for the on rushing Sam Gallagher who forced a corner with another sweet strike. Blessington packed the penalty area and Sam Gallagher on the far post collected the ball from the corner and found an unmarked Folu. Folu kept his cool and picked out Shane Sargent with a wonderful pass. Shane still had a lot to do with the keeper and full back rushing out to block the shot and cleverly smashed the ball over the diving keepers head and into the roof of the net. 1-1 with a minute left on the clock. It was a fair reward for the second half performance.
I’d like to acknowledge the performance of the Dalkey United No #5 who was Man of the Match.
