UNDER 8’s UPHILL BATTLE PROVES TOO MUCH

Granada too Strong.. but only Just.

It was very much a case of another bite of the cherry for the under 8’s this weekend, as they pitted their wits against Granada FC for a second time in a week and having admired the heels of the Granada player’s boots for most of the game last week, the Blessington players were under strict instructions this time around, to get stuck in from the first whistle. From the moment the game got underway it was clear that the message had been received loud and clear!

                                                                        Confidence

The customary settling in period was grabbed firmly by the neck and throw right out the proverbial window as Blessington hassled, harried and tormented a Granada side that had the air of a team that only had to turn up to get a result. The settled defence trio of Callinan, King and Gray looked confident and assured. The midfield paring of O’Connor and Hardy looked hungrier than we’d ever seen them before and the forward partnership of Power and O’Toole lead the line up front and threatened the Granada defence with every opportunity.

                                                                        Cinderella

The half wore on and as Blessington continued to frighten the footballing lives out of their opponents…. the play stopped! “What’s this all about!” everyone thought (including Chris Callinan). The referee darted over to the Blessington line and announced. “You’ve an extra player on the pitch”.

“No we don’t”. “Yes you do”. “No we don’t”. “Yes you do”

“Is this a Panto, or a football match? Count the players and let’s get on with it”

8 v 8 was the count, but to onlookers (including the ref.) it seemed like Blessington had and extra man. Testament to the effort and performance being put in by the team.

As the first half drew to a close, Granada broke forward and produced a couple of great chances, but as is par for the course now, Patrick Foley put his body on line and pulled off a couple of world class saves to ensure the teams went in honors even at half time.

                                                                    Steep hill ahead

The second half saw Blessington spring a couple of fresh pairs of legs from the bench, as Billy Moore and Jack McManus took to the field and from the moment play resumed they got straight into the action.Having played downhill in the first half, Blessington were going to have to fight even harder in the second if they were going to get anything out of the game. But, as the half wore on, it was clear that the steep hill was going to be the deciding factor and with 32 minutes on the clock, Granada scored the opener after a quick counter attack saw their number 8 slot home from close range. Much as they tried, Blessington were unable to get back into the game and two more excellent goals from Granada late in the game sealed the victory.

The score line flattered the home side and the relief was palpable on the faces of their players and coaches. Once again this was case of the performance being more important than the result and those watching today can have no doubt that this group of players will become a team very much to be feared in the coming weeks and months!
