This was the 3rd meet this season of these two teams, with both claiming tight victories in the previous two games. Blessington were without a game for the last 4 weeks and from the off looked extremely rusty.
Railway Union to their credit are an extremely well organized outfit, playing a 4-4-2 formation and opting to play long balls out of defense to their speedy strikers, this game was always going to be a challenge for our Blesso kids. From the off Union got about Blessington and with five minutes on the clock should have went 1 up, when from a long ball their striker was put clean through the Blesso defense, but he snapped at his shot and it flew narrowly past the post. Minutes later the opening goal came from a mix up in the Blesso defense, the ball broke kindly to the union midfielder who gratefully tapped the ball into the empty net after the Blesso keeper and defender dallied over who would clear it. Again not long after this mix up a similar mistake again between the rusty Blesso defense and keeper allowed the Union player a free shot at goal, thankfully this time our keeper made amends by snatching the ball off the players foot as he steadied himself for a shot. Blessington although rusty were starting to impose themselves on the game and a series of rash fouls from the Union players lead to a couple of really good chances from Blesso to equalize. Daragh Broe Foster was first up with a lovely free kick that the keeper did well to save, and similarly Adams bent a free kick from the other side of the pitch, again the Union keeper was equal to the task. Tadgh Miley was unlucky when he broke through the Union defense, but his shot was blocked brilliantly by the goal keeper.
Half Time 1-0
The Second half was all about the rejuvenated Blesso kids, who rallied brilliantly and laid siege in the Union half. Cian McCarthy broke down the wing and fired an excellent ball across the box only to see it just cleared before Patrick Cunningham could connect, Adams next sliced the Union defense open with a great ball that sent Daragh Broe Foster through one on one with the keeper, but the little winger took one touch to many and his shot was well saved by the keeper from close range. Union were still a threat from the long ball and continually fired long passes out of defense, although Blesso defense was now dealing with this threat admirably. Again Blesso broke and Daragh Gilroy laid a ball onto Finn Harney, who in turn passed to Daragh Broe Foster, with a neat piece of inter play with Adams, he found himself space for a shot, but was unlucky when the big defender blocked well. With a minute on the clock and Blesso completely camped in the Union box they got their just rewards for their persistence. Tadgh Miley who had grown into this game and with Adams, Cian and both Daragh’s were controlling the midfield, he finally broke through the Union defense and just as he was about to pull the trigger, had his legs pulled from under him. clear penalty and the referee duly awarded it. Ryan Keogh coolly slotted the peno home with a finely place shot the sent the keeper the wrong way.
Full Time 1-1
This was a well deserved point that on another day could and probably should have been 3. The Blesso kids who had not played for 4 weeks showed great spirit and resilience and in fairness especially in the second half some great skill. Well Done Guys
