Railway Union U10’s 1 v 0 Blessington U10’s
After a later than expected start to game, due a no show by the referee, the U10’s kicked off their season with a difficult away game against Railway Union at Park Avenue. Newly promoted to Division 1, Blessington settled into the game with ease, keeping their structure and limited Railway to a small number of chances. Our defensive trio of Brian, Matt & Shane did some stellar work as a unit in front of our goalkeeper Zach, (who’s confidence grows with every game he plays between the posts). Much of the defensive work done in training is now beginning to pay dividends, particularly against good opposition. The lads showed excellent control holding their line, were aggressive in their tackling and supportive to each other throughout. Unfortunately a great strike late in the half left us trailing at the break. There were some tired legs at half time, the hot weather was taking its toll on the lads in this tough encounter. The second half started similar to the way the first ended and despite our defense holding strong our midfield couldn’t get into the game. Railway had most of the possession throughout the match and showed great levels of skill and composure on the ball (something we have to aspire to over the coming months). Playing against good opposition meant we had limited goal scoring opportunities so it was difficult to stay composed on the ball after chasing the game for such long periods. And so our first game of the season finished with a 1-0 defeat. But with a much improved defensive display, we have a good foundation to build on for season ahead but plenty of room for improvement elsewhere.
A special mention for our captain today Sean Gallagher (Blesso’s man of the match) who covered every blade of grass in effort to get us back into the game. His effort and attitude was inspirational.
