Blessington U11’s 0 – 2 Beechwood U11’s
Chances were minimal in the first ten minutes of the match with both teams defense dominant, while midfield were still sizing each other out. Beechwood’s David Blake had a great shot saved by MikeyO’Toole early on and Blesso’s Conor O’Toole was unlucky with his snap shot from out side the box which was saved by Ben Tiernan in the Beechwood goal. Beechwood grew into this game and had a great five minute period where they spurned two glorious chances, first from a corner Luca Hasset headed just by the post from close range, straight after this attach Beechwood were thwarted again, the Blesso keeper who was having an impressive first half pulled off a great save from Charlie Mulderry, It was Blesso’s time to flex their muscles and Sean Broderick did brilliantly to weave in between two players and unleashed a shot, unfortunately the Beechwood keeper was equal to the task and pulled the ball in comfortably. Two minutes later Dean O’Connor hit a shot from outside the box which again was saved well by the Beechwood Keeper. Blesso were rallying in the dying minutes of the first half and should have done better from a brilliant corner from Ben Fitzsimmons which was missed by a ruck of players. (H-T 0-0)
The second half started off much like the first with both teams sizing each other out and both defenses still on top. Ben Fitzsimmons had a great free kick which was blocked in the six yard box and cleared to safety and at the other end Rich Towagh was unlucky with a header which flew inches by the post. Beechwood again started to exert pressure on the Blesso defense and were unlucky not to be ahead when after a mad scramble in the Blesso box, Dan Cooney finally got the ball clear to safety after a brilliant last ditch challenge preventing a certain goal. Beechwood really were on top now during this period and in a two minute period scored two goals both by their lively Charlie Mulderry, first one was a tap in after a great save from the Blesso keeper and the second a fine team goal with some great interplay between Sam Tackberry and Ryan Nugent fed in Charlie, this time he kept his cool and slotted a lovely shot into the net. Beechwoods Andrew Frazer flashed another great chance by the post soon after this and then Mikey O’Toole pulled off a great double save first from Liam Flannagan and Eoin O’Riordan on the rebound. Blesso rallied in the later stages of the match and Dean Nielan was unlucky not to score from Ben Fitzsimmons freekick. Finally the referee blew his whistle and the game was up. Blessington showed great character to keep fighting to the end and were gracious in defeat, Beechwood were worthy winners and at times played some wonderful football.
